Best Defense Lacrosse Heads and Poles (Long Sticks)
Prices updated November 2, 2026.
Defensemen need two things from a stick: a head stiff enough to throw checks and scoop ground balls without flexing, and a long pole they can control. These are every defense-specific head, long-pole shaft and complete defensive stick in our daily price check. Defense heads are usually labeled with a "D" (like the Warrior Evo QX-D or StringKing Mark 3D), and defense shafts are sold in long-pole length.
Defense heads (9)
Heads built for checking and ground balls. Unstrung heads need mesh and stringing; strung versions come ready to put on a shaft.
Defense shafts (long poles) (20)
Long-pole shafts for close defense and long-stick midfielders. Models marked "Box" are made for box lacrosse.
Complete defensive sticks (3)
A head already strung and mounted on a long pole. The simplest option for a first-year defenseman.

Buying tips
- High school (NFHS) and college (NCAA) rules allow long crosses between 52 and 72 inches total, head included. Most players cut a pole down to their height and preference.
- A stiffer head holds its shape on checks and ground balls; that is the main reason defense heads exist.
- Check your league rules before buying a head for game play, especially for youth leagues.
- Last season's colorway of a defense pole is often the same pole for less, so watch the price history on each product page.
